Midland Sailing Club Laser Open Meeting 2017

The Laser Class Captain

On Sunday 23rd July Midland Sailing club welcomed eight visitors from Trimpley, Bowmoor, Bartley and Draycote Sailing Clubs to the Laser Midland Grand Prix event, the 13th in the series.

On arrival visitors were surprised at the low water level revealing a useful sandy beach in front of the clubhouse.  The forecast was for light winds 4-8 knots;  however, in the event conditions were a mixture of sun and clouds with some moderate gusts at times. Race Officers Richard Adams and Mike Anslow rose to the challenge of setting interesting courses in some very changeable conditions.

The first race was off to a good start no boats over the line. John Ling (Bartley) led the fleet followed by Lazaros Andronis (Midland) until changing places with Richard Pratt during the third lap.  Michael Dalziel maintained 4th place until overtaken by Paul Powell in the final lap.  Further down the fleet there was a lot of place changes before coming off the water for lunch. Final places were John Ling 1st, Richard Pratt 2nd, Lazaros Andronis 3rd.

The wind had veered for the second race resulting in a slightly modified course with a shorter first leg.  The race was off to a clean start with a close first beat and remained close until rounding of the sheltered westerly mark.  After the long broad reach the fleet had divided into two, and a gust brought them back closer together.  At the end of the first lap John Ling led, followed by Charlie Turnbull and Richard Pratt.  On the second beat the fleet divides again, with Ellie Craig improving her position by three places.  John Ling finished in first place, followed by Richard Pratt and Neil Crosby.

For the third race there was a slightly reduced fleet of 13 sailors, and wind had became light and steady.  The start was very tight over the first few legs before some separation of the fleet occurred with most finishing 5 minutes after the John Ling.  Richard Pratt is was 2nd and Michael Dalziel 3rd.  Overall placings for the day were: John Ling (Bartley, pictured here with Douglas Bridger) 1st, Richard Pratt (RYA) 2nd, Neil Crosby (Bowmoor) 3rd, after tie break with Lazaros. First Radial: Ellie Craig (Draycote); First Junior: Charlie Turnbull (RYA).

Thanks to Richard Adams, Mike Anslow, Alan Birch, Jackie Birch, Douglas Bridger, Sarah Crabtree, Amanda Homer, Stuart Jones, Andrew Prosser, and David Trott for helping to make this event a success."
