Southport 24 hour race 2007

MSC Team at Southport

Once more Midland sailing club endured the Southport 24 hour race with vigour and enthusiasm and came away only a little disappointed.

The “A” team consisted of P. Leavers, R. Dee, C. Martin and Sonic helming ably assisted by N. Spurr, C. Gould, P. Scott and K. Hopkin as crews.

The boat was sailed superbly by all members of the team and hovered around 9th and 12th position throughout the first 23 hours. A severe increase in wind strength and a capsize at the gybe mark ended with disaster, the boat coming to dry land and a possible early finish. Alas me hearty’s, not this team. A quick repair put the stricken vessel back into action and a 22nd finish. Without the breakage they would have finished 9th/10th.

The “B” team also suffered from the increase in wind strength and after 3 quick capsizes the boat was towed ashore. To safeguard a limitation in damage it was decided to remove the boat from the water and a final finish of 58th. This was disappointing as the team were consistently around 50-53 until the capsize.

There were several pleasing aspects to the “B” team display, with new additions to the Southport trek making it a team of varying ages and experience.

There was young Emily at 14, Elizabeth at 15 through to Arthur (back to the future) Bedford at 73, what more can a team captain ask for.

My special thanks to everyone involved in the Southport venture, it’s a pleasure to organise it for you.
