Junior and Youth Sailing
The club has a strong and growing junior and youth sailing section, open to anyone between the ages of 7 and 18 years.
Who are we?
We are a parent and volunteer-run group who aim to introduce children and young adults (from about 7 to 18) to sailing in a safe and relaxed environment. Whilst we do not run specific ‘Learn to sail’ courses we will teach absolute beginners to sail and advance them in confidence and skill so they can competently race against other juniors and adults. Young sailors can also complete RYA achievement levels assessed by Midland Sailing Club instructors.
The Juniors – ages from 7 (with close parental involvement) to about 10 years old – sail in Optimist dinghies, which are purpose designed for children and very difficult to capsize. The Youth fleet use Topper and RS Feva dinghies as well as other club boats such as the Laser 2000 and GP14.
When do we meet?
We meet most Saturdays at 9.30 am until 12.15 pm. You will be informed by text message if a session is cancelled. You will receive an eventbrite invitation each week and must book a place for your child to participate. We will not be able to accommodate any children who have not pre-booked. Please pass your e-mail address to the junior volunteers to be included in the invitation.
Children under 14 must be accompanied by a responsible adult at all times. Children over 14 can be left unaccompanied at the discretion of the club, but we ask that a Medical Consent form is completed in case of accident.
It is expected that all sailors and parents give assistance whenever help is required. The juniors themselves are expected to rig their own boats and to put them away afterwards.
Many of the youth fleet also sail in the regular Saturday and Wednesday race series, either as crew or using the club boats. Some of our Youth sailors have their own boats as well, including optimists and Lasers.
How do I join?
Just come along to the club on a Saturday morning to have a look around and meet everyone. Contact the junior’s secretary Adam Maclean
It may be a few weeks before your child can come along to the club – we need to slot your child into the right group and day for them.
You can have three taster sessions for free, after which we ask that your child joins the sailing club which is £48 per year.
